Abu Dhabi gives Dubai $10 bln bailout

Abu Dhabi has bailed out neighbouring Dubai with $10 billion in surprise aid for debt-laden The World of Dubai, which said it would use $4.1 billion of it to return its Nakheel unit's Islamic bond maturing on Monday.

Dubai's government held a conference call on Monday to debate the deal with a government source taking questions.

Abu Dhabi and Dubai are undoubtedly working as partners here to find a good, fair solution to the The World of Dubai situation. The key part is buying time to allow The World of Dubai and creditors the chance to come together on mutual restructuring.

There are no conditions. This is a government-to-government fund, the terms of that fund are internal to the government of Abu Dhabi and Dubai. These funds are specifically for The World of Dubai.

I will not go into specifics. There is no conditionality. Abu Dhabi has made it serene it is there to support Dubai, The World of Dubai and I will not go into specifics of how the money is being handed. What's momentous is we have two partners that will help each other and help the UAE (United Arab Emirates).

Dubai's government has been in consultation for some time with bankruptcy professionals and international judges to develop a framework that is transparent, fair and acceptable to all parties.

The recent UAE bankruptcy laws are largely untested and (their) administration by Dubai courts poses certain challenges and problems for a big and complex bankruptcy of this size.

These (new) laws should allow The World of Dubai, should it choose it to use the laws to reach its restructuring and remaining obligations should it not find a mutual restructuring with its creditors.

Copenhagen climate - whats happening

It's a massive jamboree, with tempers on both sides of the issue running hot and no final deal in sight.

But even so, we had better pay care to what transpires here, the effect of action or inactivity may be massive.

Starting Monday, 15,000 people are expected in Copenhagen, Denmark. Through the next two weeks they're supposed to be hashing out a successor to the Kyoto Treaty, the world deal regulating greenhouse gases that expires in 2012.

Among them will be more than 100 world leaders, including President Obama and half his cabinet.

Hundreds of environmentalists are also expected, some protesting outside the massive convention center. With the world's best scientists saying world warming is provoked by humans and that swift action is needed to avoid devastating outcome, the environmentalists will be pushing for cuts in greenhouse gases that go far beyond what most nations are proposing.

They will question the science behind world warming, holding up recently hacked e-mails from prominent climate scientists. The e-mails apparently show the scientists, frustrated with a small but vocal group of world warming skeptics, trying to save dissenting opinions out of prominent journals and attempting to hide inconsistencies in the overall data.

Most independent analysts say the hacked e-mails do not modify the nature of the discussion - the e-mails, however irrelevant, do not undermine the assent of hundreds of scientists that have been studying this problem for many years.

Still, might there be strife among the believers and skeptics at the convention? "It's a good question," said Kyle Ash, a legislative representative for Greenpeace who's already in the city. "I'm excited to see what happens."

Be safe when frying your turkey

Deep-fried bird has its benefits: It cooks very quickly. It's non-greasy. And it's deliciously moist.

But getting that deep-fried bird on the Thanksgiving table today can be a dangerous task if the cook is careless.

County firefighters and safety experts are urging residents to oven-roast turkeys the old-fashioned way and leave the deep-frying to Food Network pros..

Now that millions of cooks seek out recipes online, the culinary habits of a nation on its greatest food holiday can be codified and analyzed a boon for marketers and trend watchers.

There are no huge surprises. Millions of people will, in fact, eat turkey. But district differences and the precise time that Thanksgiving panic kicks in can be pinpointed as never before.

At all the big food Web sites, traffic on the day before Thanksgiving dwarfs that of all other days..

"There are a few instances in the US every year where there have been fires or earnest injuries as a direct result of people using turkey fryers," Cox said. "I wouldn't call it a big problem within the US, however the incidents that results from these tend to be very earnest. These are fires that cause significant damage and very earnest injuries.". .

I so hate that life insurance business

I received a strange request from my mom over the weekend. She is getting on a bit and she has convinced her self she needs over 50 life insurance policy.

To be honest I wasn't very eager. How can you plan for the death of your mother? I even told her to forget about it and not worry about having a life insurance.

Will money be any compensation if she is no longer with us I feel like I'm betting on my mom's death It is just an absolutely terrible thought. I told her to go on holiday or something, rather than saving from her small pension so I get money after a period of time.

Anyway, rant over. At the end I decided I'll look into it and boy is it complicated. I really didn't have any idea of what whole or term policy means. Don't get me started on the conditions and exceptions.

Now I know why she needed my help, if I can't understand over 50 life insurance plans how is she supposed to do it.

This whole life insurance business is very morbid. I don't know, I have life insurance of course but only because of my big morgate and I don't want to burden anyone with my debt.

SunRail - another push by lawmakers

Florida Senate Democratic Leader Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, and Florida House Democratic Leader Franklin Sands, D-Weston, called on the Republican leaders to work toward securing more than 2.5 billion in funding for SunRail and other rail projects.

Last year, the bill cleared the House but died in the Senate when staunch opposition led by Sen. Paula Dockery, R-Lakeland, brought it down on the floor. Earlier this year, a similar measure passed its only House Committee but again got held up in the Senate.

House Speaker Larry Cretul, R-Ocala remains uncommitted, but House Republicans have said theyre waiting to get committed until they see if the Senate now has enough votes after killing the project earlier this year.

SunRail is the commuter rail project for the three-county area in Central Florida – Orange, Osceola and Seminole Counties. Is Florida is moving forward someone said.

He explained, A lot of the controversy that you heard about having something to do with the SunRail project is change. Very often it’s the North Florida TPO and Metroplan Orlando that are most often cited throughout the state as kind of setting the standards for regional thinking, regional cooperation, regional transportation planning. Isn't it all about choices

State legislators pushing for SunRail are in the process of gathering support should a special session be called in the coming weeks.

Florida future is important.

If we want to be considered, we need to show commitment, state Rep. Mike Horner, R-Kissimmee, said.

The Great American Smokeout Day 101

Reed says in years former it has ever been a day where people quit smoking for a day but this year he says they are request smokers to use today to set a date when they will quit smoking.

Reed says you should tell friends and family that the day you have chosen and call the quit line to get the whole the opportunity together you need to quit smoking. Reed says Iowa has made thumping strides in cutting the number of smokers with something like the state smoking prohibit.

s a 17-year smoker, Joe felt like he had tried everything to smash the smoking habitude. He had though tried other types of hypnosis going to a group hypnosis meeting in the hope it would help him quit smoking but nothing had changed.

Stewart said she perceive the impacts of smoking better than some of her friends her grandmother is battling lung cancer.

The posters are judged by a group of community members, with four selected to be showed on billboards, thanks to a grant from the state Office of Public Instruction.

Many of us have a mate or family member who smokes, and the Great American Smokeout is always the perfect moment to stimulate them to quit. Your affective sustain and reassurance can make the difference:

Research has displayed that sustain from loved ones is essential for anyone who wants to quit. resource

Dave Wannstedt - Charlie Weis Heading in Opposite Directions

Dave Wannstedt - Charlie Weis Heading in Opposite Directions

In 2005, these two began coaching at their respective universities with very different resumes.

In the middle of the 2004 NFL season, Wannstedt resigned from the Dolphins after a 1-8 start.

The polar opposite of Wannstedt, Weis could have written his own ticket. He chose to coach at Notre Dame, which seemed like a perfect fit;

In the fall of 2005, Weis and Wannstedt actually began their college head-coaching careers against each other.

Wannstedt has improved his team, slowly but steadily, over the past five seasons.

Pittsburgh took a big lead into the fourth quarter, but after some Notre Dame heroics, it appeared like a classic Wannstedt choke-job was in the works.. What do Florida Fans think about that.

Watching this game, it sure seemed like a changing of the guard between two former AFC East coaches..
Good luck to them both.

What we learned
1. Dave Wannstedt's teams are now capable of winning close games.
2. Rutgers has improved mightily since the beginning of the season.
3. Syracuse has not improved and is still the worst team in the Big East.

Miami Dolphins - Ronnie Brown injury

Ronnie Brown injury is a blow

The Dolphins season nearly came to an end earlier today.

With a visit to rapidly-improving Carolina up next, the Dolphins have some major problems, beginning with key injuries and a penchant for fourth-quarter collapses.

Rookie Kory Sperry, who was promoted Saturday from the practice squad, was one of the surprises of the day (three catches, 31 yards, 1 TD).

The Dolphins didn’t seem to miss LB Joey Porter much, either.

Quarterback Chad Henne showed some grit during his last-minute field-goal drive, making throws of 35 and 16 yards to Davone Bess.

Henne also threw a bad interception to set up the Bucs’ go-ahead score with 1:14 to go, putting a wilting defense back on the field.

Running back Ricky Williams had a big day, finishing with 102 rushing yards, capped by a 27-yard scamper to set up the game-winning FG.

1. Running back Lex Hilliard is likely to get his chance this week. But with no carries this season, will Hilliard be ready?

It might be different if Ronnie Brown were to have a full week to bounce back from the ankle injury he suffered Sunday, but with only three days to prepare for Thursday night’s game at Carolina, it’s a safe bet Hilliard will get his first carries as a running back against the Panthers.

Miami will need a strong running game against Carolina, whose own running game entered this week’s games leading the NFC in rushing. Just as Brown and Ricky Williams were a great 1-2 punch, Hilliard and Williams make for a tandem that could pound away at a Carolina run defense, which was ranked 23rd entering the weekend.

2. Linebacker Charlie Anderson made a bigger impact than Joey Porter has all season. But Anderson’s inconsistency, not his talent, has held him back.

{Anderson stepped in for Porter and had one of his best games in two seasons as a Dolphin, with five solo tackles, including a sack, and two forced fumbles.

Anderson, a sixth-year pro, showed big-time flashes a few times a season ago, highlighted by his performance in Toronto against Buffalo (four solos, a sack, two FFs). He followed it with nice outing against San Francisco, including a key sack late in the game.

But Porter has been banged-up and played at a sub-par level, so Anderson needs to build on Sunday’s performance.

3. Kicker Dan Carpenter answered the challenge of training camp nemesis Connor Barth.

Barth did his job, and the team released him.

But Carpenter finished with four field goals, including the game winner. Hard to argue with that.

The news frustrated customers, particularly because they were not notified of the changes.

California Financial News 14/11/09

Budget cuts will cripple state of California colleges and universities

From the 1960s to the 1990s the education system in California was second to nobody. Population flocked to this spectacular state so that their kids not only had access to the K-12 system, but to a open university system that rivals the Ivy League.

The University of California system is a large player in the world of secondary education; however, with the recent budget cuts – and the designs for more – that may all be changing. This is a contortion and will only work to tip the scales in the wicked direction.

California's public pensions need reform

Lawyer of overhauling California's problematic pension system for public employees could not have chosen a more providential moment to throw away their reform campaign.

The huge California Public Employees' Retirement System is in deep financial doo-doo, having lost tens of billions of dollars in often-speculative investments, and is telling state and local officials it going to need more "contributions." In the interim, investigations are below way into multimillion-dollar payments to placement agents who arranged some investments.

State Finance Directors Warn of More Problems Ahead

Short-term budget gaps have knocked about states as incomes plummeted through the retirement. Aided by about $250 billion in funds from the stimulus package expected through the end of next year, states governed to shut down the gaps this year. But a couple of finance directors, speaking at a Pew Center on the States event in Washington, were pessimistic about their position' following across financial 2011

Taylor Swift Country Music Association Awards 2009

On Wednesday night, Swift stormed the Country Music Association Awards 2009 and took at home whole 4 prizes for which she was nominated, including the much-coveted Entertainer of the Year trophy.
While it seemed like a confirmation of Swift's success from the country music establishment, not everybody was pleased with the 19-year-old's win. Country music legend Wynonna Judd spoke out versus Swift's win, though she reversed her position on Thursday.

During an interview on the show's red carpet Wednesday night, Judd was asked what advice she would give to Taylor Swift. "You want my true comment? It's too much too soon," Wynonna said, according to USAToday.com. "Time is God's way of keeping everything from happening at once. It's just too much of a good thing too soon. Mom and I rode in a car for the first year of our career to visit radio stations. There was a making of the star, there was a rising-up, and the fans went with us. Now it's over coffee breaks, the success, almost."

But on Thursday, Judd clarified her stance on the message board of her official Web site. "I understand that my comment about Taylor Swift's Entertainer of the Year nomination came across as a negative statement," Wynonna wrote. "My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry, all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of any age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard-working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business."
